Wednesday, December 31, 2025

New York Rangers at Washington Capitals – 12:30 PM ET

Moneyline: Capitals -160 | Rangers +128

Puck Line: Capitals -1.5 (+220) | Rangers +1.5 (-280)

Total: 5.5 (Over -128 | Under +104)

The Capitals (20-14-5) welcome the struggling Rangers (19-17-5) in a matinee Metropolitan Division showdown. Washington has dominated this matchup recently, winning four of the last five meetings, and the underlying numbers tell the story of two teams trending in opposite directions.

New York’s metrics are alarming – they rank 28th in expected goals for per 60 minutes and 28th in expected goal share. Meanwhile, Washington holds advantages in all three key analytical categories. The goaltending matchup heavily favors the Caps, with Logan Thompson projected to start. The current Vezina Trophy frontrunner carries a 15-10-3 record with a .915 save percentage and 2.33 GAA.

Adam Fox could be a game-time decision for New York after missing 14 games with an upper-body injury, but even his potential return may not be enough to overcome the Rangers’ systematic issues.

The Play: Capitals ML (-160) – Washington’s superior metrics and goaltending give them a clear edge in this divisional rivalry.

Nashville Predators at Vegas Golden Knights – 3:00 PM ET

Moneyline: Golden Knights (price unavailable)

Analysis: Vegas (25-8-3) leads the Pacific Division on a six-game winning streak, the longest active run in the NHL. Nashville (11-19-7) plays their second game of a back-to-back after a 3-0 shutout loss to Winnipeg on Monday.

The Predators are working toward a milestone – Steven Stamkos needs one power-play goal to become the 12th player with 100 road power-play goals. However, playing on tired legs against the hottest team in the Pacific makes this a difficult spot for Nashville.

Carter Hart is projected to start for Vegas, while Juuse Saros gets the nod for Nashville despite the quick turnaround.

The Play: Golden Knights in regulation – Vegas should handle a fatigued Predators squad at home.

Tampa Bay Lightning at Anaheim Ducks – 4:00 PM ET

The Lightning (22-13-3) have been one of the East’s most dangerous teams lately. The Ducks (14-17-4) are coming off a 5-3 comeback win against Edmonton where Troy Terry (27 points in 35 games) extended his hot play.

The Play: Lightning ML – Tampa Bay’s talent and playoff experience should be the difference.

Minnesota Wild at San Jose Sharks – 4:00 PM ET

The Wild (22-11-4) have lost five of seven but remain a playoff-caliber team. San Jose (11-22-6) continues to develop young talent, with Macklin Celebrini (27 points in 27 games) averaging a point per game as the only rookie to do so this season.

The Play: Wild ML – Despite their recent struggles, Minnesota has too much firepower for the rebuilding Sharks.

Winnipeg Jets at Detroit Red Wings – 6:30 PM ET

Connor Hellebuyck earned his NHL-leading fifth shutout Monday for the League-leading Jets (27-10-1). Kyle Connor has 15 points during a seven-game point streak. The Red Wings (23-14-3) are surging themselves and will be a tough test at home.

John Gibson gets the start for Detroit in this matchup.

The Play: Jets ML – Winnipeg’s elite goaltending and balanced attack make them worth backing even on the road.

New Jersey Devils at Columbus Blue Jackets – 7:00 PM ET

Moneyline: Pick ’em (-110 both sides)

Puck Line: Blue Jackets +1.5 (-280) | Devils -1.5 (+220)

Total: 6.5 (Over +108 | Under -132)

The Devils (20-17-2) hold a one-point lead over Washington for second in the Metropolitan. Jesper Bratt has five assists during a four-game point streak for New Jersey.

Columbus (17-15-6) gets a favorable home matchup. Zach Werenski has a remarkable 12-game home point streak (24 points) and can become just the second defenseman in 30 years to extend a home point streak to 13 games (Mike Green, 14 in 2009-10).

The Play: Blue Jackets ML (-110) – Werenski’s historic run and Columbus’ home-ice advantage make them the value side of a coin flip.

Buffalo Sabres at Dallas Stars – 8:00 PM ET

The Sabres (14-19-4) seek a season-high fourth consecutive win and look to sweep the season series after a 4-2 victory in Buffalo in October. Dallas (21-13-1) captain Jamie Benn has points in eight of his past nine games.

Jake Oettinger projects to start for the Stars against Alex Lyon.

The Play: Stars ML – Dallas at home should be too much for Buffalo’s winning streak.

St. Louis Blues at Colorado Avalanche – 9:00 PM ET

Analysis: The Blues (17-17-4) visit an Avalanche (22-15-0) squad getting elite production from Nathan MacKinnon, who has 10 points during a four-game point streak and leads the NHL with 60 points and 46 assists.

Jordan Binnington starts for St. Louis while Scott Wedgewood gets the nod for Colorado.

The Play: Avalanche -1.5 – MacKinnon and the Avs should roll at home against a mediocre Blues team.

Philadelphia Flyers at Calgary Flames – 9:30 PM ET

The Flyers (19-11-7) feature rookie sensation Matvei Michkov (29 points, leads all first-year skaters). Calgary (17-12-7) gets offensive production from Jonathan Huberdeau, who’s on pace for a career-high 34 goals.

Samuel Ersson faces Dustin Wolf in the crease.

The Play: Flames ML – Calgary at home with their offensive surge makes them the play.

Boston Bruins at Edmonton Oilers – 9:30 PM ET

Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl are both on 11-game point streaks, the longest active runs in the NHL. McDavid has 21 points (3 goals, 18 assists) while Draisaitl has 23 (9 goals, 14 assists) during their respective tears.

The Oilers (21-12-3) are trying to avoid their first three-game losing streak since opening 0-3-0. Boston (20-14-4) counters with Brad Marchand on a nine-game road point streak (11 points).

The Play: Oilers ML – McDavid and Draisaitl at home are nearly impossible to stop right now.

New Year’s Day features eight games as teams shake off the holiday celebrations:

Washington Capitals at Ottawa Senators – 1:00 PM ET

The Capitals look to start the New Year strong against a middling Senators (17-15-5) squad. Ottawa needs points to stay in the playoff race.

Utah Mammoth at New York Islanders – 3:00 PM ET

Utah (18-19-3) visits the Islanders (21-14-4), who are 5-0 in their last five against Toronto and riding momentum.

Winnipeg Jets at Toronto Maple Leafs – 7:00 PM ET

The league-leading Jets travel to face a Maple Leafs (20-16-3) team still without captain Auston Matthews (upper-body injury). This is a measuring-stick game for Toronto.

The Play: Jets ML – Winnipeg’s depth and goaltending advantage with Matthews out makes them the pick.

Detroit Red Wings at Pittsburgh Penguins – 7:00 PM ET

Sidney Crosby (98 points in calendar year 2024) can reach 100 regular-season points in a calendar year for the ninth time, which would break a five-way tie for second-most in NHL history. Patrick Kane returns to face Pittsburgh and needs two home points to tie Phil Housley for second among US-born skaters.

The Play: Red Wings ML – Detroit’s hot streak continues on New Year’s Day.

Montreal Canadiens at Carolina Hurricanes – 7:00 PM ET

Jake Evans has a five-game goal streak for Montreal (20-12-6), tied for the longest by a Canadiens skater in five seasons. Carolina (24-12-3) may be without Shayne Gostisbehere (upper-body).

Tampa Bay Lightning at Los Angeles Kings – 7:00 PM ET

Dallas Stars at Chicago Blackhawks – 8:30 PM ET

Nashville Predators at Seattle Kraken – 10:00 PM ET

Friday, January 2, 2026 – Winter Classic

2026 Discover NHL Winter Classic

New York Rangers at Florida Panthers – 8:00 PM ET

LoanDepot Park, Miami

Moneyline: Expect Panthers around -140

Historical Context: This marks the first Winter Classic played in Florida and Florida’s first-ever outdoor game. The Rangers are 2-0-0 in Winter Classic history (2012, 2018).

The Panthers (23-12-5) are the two-time defending Stanley Cup champions playing in front of their home fans in an unprecedented South Florida outdoor hockey game. After the failed experiment of playing on New Year’s Eve (which produced the lowest-rated Winter Classic ever), the NHL moved the 2026 edition to Friday, January 2nd.

New York enters on shaky ground, struggling with poor underlying metrics all season. Florida should have the motivational edge playing in their first outdoor contest at the home of the Miami Marlins.

Weather Note: Unlike traditional Winter Classics, temperature won’t be an issue – expect warm Florida conditions that could affect ice quality as the game progresses.

The Play: Panthers ML – The atmosphere, home-ice advantage, and superior talent make Florida the smart bet in this historic matchup.

The 2026 Winter Classic heads to Miami: Panthers vs. Rangers outdoors.

Other Friday Games:

  • Vegas Golden Knights at St. Louis Blues – 3:00 PM ET
  • Seattle Kraken at Vancouver Canucks – 10:30 PM ET
  • Minnesota Wild at Anaheim Ducks – 10:30 PM ET

Saturday, January 3, 2026

Saturday brings a massive 13-game slate, the busiest day of the holiday weekend:

Pittsburgh Penguins at Detroit Red Wings – 12:00 PM ET

Utah Mammoth at New Jersey Devils – 3:00 PM ET

Buffalo Sabres at Columbus Blue Jackets – 3:00 PM ET

Philadelphia Flyers at Edmonton Oilers – 3:30 PM ET

The Flyers’ young guns including Michkov face the Oilers’ superstar duo. Expect Edmonton’s power play (33.33%, league-leading) to be a factor.

Montreal Canadiens at St. Louis Blues – 4:00 PM ET

Tampa Bay Lightning at San Jose Sharks – 4:00 PM ET

Winnipeg Jets at Ottawa Senators – 7:00 PM ET

Toronto Maple Leafs at New York Islanders – 7:00 PM ET

The Islanders have dominated this matchup, winning five straight against Toronto since March 2023.

Chicago Blackhawks at Washington Capitals – 7:00 PM ET

Connor Bedard’s Blackhawks visit the Capitals on Youth Hockey Night. Bedard (32 points in 37 games) continues his impressive sophomore campaign.

Colorado Avalanche at Carolina Hurricanes – 7:00 PM ET

Two of the East and West’s best clash in Raleigh. Nathan MacKinnon leads the NHL in points (60) and assists (46).

The Play: Avalanche ML – MacKinnon is playing at an MVP level.

Nashville Predators at Calgary Flames – 7:00 PM ET

Minnesota Wild at Los Angeles Kings – 9:00 PM ET

Boston Bruins at Vancouver Canucks – 10:00 PM ET

Sunday, January 4, 2026

The holiday weekend concludes with five Sunday games:

Montreal Canadiens at Dallas Stars – 2:00 PM ET

Dallas looks to bounce back at home after their road trip. The Stars (21-13-1) are one of the West’s elite teams.

Pittsburgh Penguins at Columbus Blue Jackets – 3:00 PM ET

Colorado Avalanche at Florida Panthers – 5:00 PM ET

A clash of conference contenders and a potential Stanley Cup Final preview. The Avalanche (22-15-0) face the two-time defending champions one day after the Winter Classic.

The Play: Panthers ML – Florida in revenge mode after potentially losing the outdoor game makes them dangerous.

Carolina Hurricanes at New Jersey Devils – 7:00 PM ET

Vegas Golden Knights at Chicago Blackhawks – 7:00 PM ET

Parlay of the Week:

  • Leon Draisaitl: 11-game point streak (23 points)
  • Vegas Golden Knights: 6-game home winning streak
  • Brad Marchand: 9-game road point streak
  • Jake Evans: 5-game goal streak

Power Play Dominance:

Edmonton leads the league at 33.33%, with 33 power-play goals. The Oilers have scored at least one PPG in their last five games. When they draw penalties, back the over.

Home Ice Matters:

  • Zach Werenski: 12-game home point streak for Columbus
  • Vegas: 6-0-0 in last six at T-Mobile Arena
  • Islanders: 5-0-0 vs Toronto since March 2023

Back-to-Back Situations:

Nashville plays back-to-back games Wednesday (at Vegas) after Tuesday’s loss to Winnipeg. Historically brutal spot for the road team.

Find the best value on a condensed holiday schedule. Hot Streaks – Special Teams – Goalie Edges.

Goaltending Matchups to Target

Wednesday’s Best:

  • Logan Thompson (WSH) vs Igor Shesterkin (NYR) – Thompson’s .915 SV% and Vezina case give Washington the edge
  • Connor Hellebuyck (WPG) vs John Gibson (DET) – Hellebuyck’s five shutouts lead the league

Value Fades:

Avoid backing teams on the second night of back-to-backs with lesser goaltending options. Nashville Wednesday is the prime example.

Total Trends

High-Scoring Potential:

  • Blue Jackets/Devils (6.5) – Both teams trending offensively, Werenski’s scoring surge
  • Any Oilers game – Edmonton’s 33.33% power play creates scoring opportunities

Under Situations:

  • Games involving elite goaltenders on form (Hellebuyck, Thompson)
  • Afternoon games after holiday celebrations (slower starts)

Injury Updates & Impact

Rangers: Adam Fox (upper-body) game-time decision – Major impact if he returns for defensive structure

Maple Leafs: Auston Matthews out (upper-body) – Fifth straight game missed, huge blow to Toronto’s offense

Capitals: Shayne Gostisbehere potentially out – Minor impact given Carolina’s defensive depth

Always check lineup confirmations and starting goaltenders before puck drop, as these can change and significantly impact betting value.

Final Thoughts

This five-day stretch offers tremendous betting opportunities with marquee matchups, milestones, and the spectacle of outdoor hockey in Miami. Focus on:

  • Riding hot streaks – McDavid, Draisaitl, and Vegas are must-backs
  • Fading struggling teams – Rangers’ metrics are concerning across the board
  • Home ice advantage – Especially on holidays when travel and celebrations factor in
  • Goaltending edges – Thompson, Hellebuyck provide significant advantages

The Winter Classic presents a unique opportunity – outdoor games historically see variance due to ice conditions and atmosphere, but Florida’s home advantage in their first-ever outdoor game should overcome the Rangers’ issues.

Responsible Gaming Reminder: Always bet within your limits and never chase losses. This is entertainment – enjoy the holiday hockey responsibly!
