2026 NHL Playoffs – Round 1 Reset

About a week into the first round and the narrative lines are already being redrawn. Three series are on the brink of sweeps. One of our marquee upset picks has already paid off and has people rethinking the rest of the series. The tightest matchup on the board is being decided in overtime. We’re getting the chaos we signed up for — and there’s still real money to be made if you know where to look.

Below is a full mid-series reset: current standings, how the lines have moved, what those movements tell you, and where we see residual value as the puck drops for Games 3 and 4.

Eastern Conference

Carolina Hurricanes vs. Ottawa SenatorsCAR leads 3-0NEARLY DONE

Carolina has been exactly what the market priced them as: a methodical, structure-first machine that doesn’t give an inch. The Hurricanes have won three consecutive games — two at home (2-0, 3-2 OT) and one on the road in Ottawa (2-1) — and have not trailed in this series for any meaningful stretch. Rod Brind’Amour’s defensive system has completely neutralized Brady Tkachuk’s physical game and Tim Stutzle’s rush opportunities. The Senators simply cannot manufacture the sustained offensive zone time required to score in volume against this structure.

From a betting standpoint, this series is effectively over. The Hurricanes’ series price is so compressed it offers no value on a futures basis. Games 4 and beyond — if they happen — will see Ottawa as a moderate home-side favorite purely on the logic of the crowd and the desperation factor, which could create a small game-line opportunity if you want to play situational hockey. But Carolina eliminating this series in four games is the most likely outcome.

LEANNo series bet value left. If Carolina leads Game 4 after two periods on the road in Ottawa, live bet the Hurricanes puck line. A tired Ottawa team going through the motions in a near-elimination game is a poor bet to claw back a late lead.
Philadelphia Flyers vs. Pittsburgh PenguinsPHI leads 3-0NEARLY DONE

This is the story of the first round. Philadelphia was +140 to win this series outright before Game 1 — a pick RinkHive made publicly in our pre-series guide — and the Flyers have been utterly dominant. Three games played, three wins: a 3-2 Game 1 on the road in Pittsburgh, a 3-0 shutout in Game 2, and a 5-2 demolition in Game 3 back in Philadelphia. Samuel Ersson has been outstanding between the pipes, and Travis Konecny’s offensive production has been elite. Pittsburgh has looked every bit their age — Crosby, Malkin, and Letang have not generated the sustained offensive zone presence needed to make this a series.

The Flyers’ series price is now astronomical, and the +140 train has long since left the station. The real question for bettors is whether Pittsburgh can win at least one game to drag this out. With nothing but pride on the line and the Flyers going for the sweep in Game 4, the Penguins historically play their best hockey in these backs-against-the-wall spots. A Penguins moneyline in Game 4 — purely as a desperate home team with Crosby needing to prove something — has contrarian situational value.

LEANNo remaining series bet value for Flyers. Target Pittsburgh +money in Game 4 as a pure situational spot. Teams facing elimination at home win outright roughly 45-50% of the time in the playoffs. The Penguins are overdue to win a game, and public money will all be on Philadelphia to close it out.
Tampa Bay Lightning vs. Montreal CanadiensSeries Tied 1-1GAME 3 TONIGHT

This is the series that has delivered exactly what was advertised. Game 1 went to Montreal in overtime (4-3), Game 2 went to Tampa Bay in overtime (3-2), and now the series shifts to Bell Centre for Games 3 and 4 with the road team having won both contests so far. That road team winning pattern is unusual and worth noting as Games 3 and 4 kick off in Montreal tonight and Sunday.

The series price has barely moved from opening — currently sitting at Tampa Bay -130 / Montreal +110 — because statistically, this is as even a matchup as the board has. Both teams finished at 106 points. Both have elite goaltending. The double-overtime games suggest goal production will be limited. With the series shifting to a loud Bell Centre environment, Montreal as a moderate home favorite in each of the next two games makes structural sense.

The most interesting angle here is the game-by-game over/under. Both games played have gone to overtime and finished under the 6-goal total. The pattern of defensive structure locking in deeper into each game is consistent with Tampa’s playoff identity. The under has hit in both games and Montreal home-ice defensive systems tend to suppress scoring in tight contests.

LEANMontreal +110 on the series with Games 3-4 at Bell Centre. Also targeting the under in Game 3 — both teams have now played two overtime contests and neither is willing to open up defensively. Tampa’s identity is built around exactly this kind of grinding, low-scoring hockey.
Buffalo Sabres vs. Boston BruinsBUF leads 2-1GAME 4 SUNDAY @ BOS

Game 1 went to Buffalo (4-3) on the emotion of the home opener, Boston leveled it with a 4-2 Game 2 win behind Pastrnak and a commanding Swayman performance — and then the Sabres went into TD Garden and took Game 3 by a 3-1 score, putting Buffalo up 2-1 in the series. That Game 3 result is significant. The narrative was supposed to be Boston controlling their building and playoff experience asserting itself. Instead, Buffalo’s young roster walked into TD Garden and outplayed a team with a franchise full of playoff history.

The series price has shifted accordingly. Buffalo, who opened at -172, is now closer to -220, while Boston has drifted out toward +175. The Bruins’ ‘experienced team’ edge has been complicated by the reality that this Sabres group is not playing scared. Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen has been composure under pressure in back-to-back road games. Buffalo’s depth scoring — the exact thing we pointed to as their structural strength — has shown up when it matters most.

That said, this series is far from over. Game 4 is Sunday in Boston, and the Bruins are a desperate team needing a win to stay alive. Pastrnak hasn’t had his series-defining game yet. Swayman is too good to let Game 3 represent his ceiling. A Boston win Sunday ties the series and sends Games 5-7 back toward Buffalo’s electric home crowd. Boston at +175 as a desperate home team trying to avoid going down 3-1 is genuine value.

LEANBoston +175 in Game 4 as a desperate home team avoiding a 3-1 hole. The series bet on Buffalo at -220 is now expensive chalk — the Bruins have enough talent to force this to six or seven games. Pastrnak hasn’t taken over yet. Bet the game, not the series price.

WESTERN CONFERENCE

Colorado Avalanche vs. Los Angeles KingsCOL leads 3-0SERIES OVER (EFFECTIVE)

The Avalanche have been everything the -340 series price advertised: an overwhelming force that has given the Kings no runway to operate. Colorado won Game 1 (2-1), Game 2 in overtime (2-1), and Game 3 (4-2) — winning three consecutive one-score games that reflect how tight the Kings have pushed them while still losing every time. Nathan MacKinnon has been the difference, and Cale Makar’s two-way game has controlled the flow of each contest.

The Kings have actually been competitive, which tells you something about their defensive structure. But competitive and winning are different things, and the Avalanche’s ability to win one-goal games on both home and road ice confirms that this is a team capable of winning a championship with its full roster active. The series price has no remaining value at -2000 or beyond. All attention should now shift to Colorado as a futures buy for the Stanley Cup.

LEANFutures play: Colorado’s Stanley Cup price was around +255 before the playoffs. That price will compress further after a sweep. If MacKinnon’s health holds — he returned from injury just before the playoffs — the Avalanche are the most complete team on the board. Buy Colorado futures now before Round 2 action further shortens the number.
Dallas Stars vs. Minnesota WildDAL leads 2-1CRITICAL GAME 4 SAT

This is the series that has swung the hardest from our pre-series assessment. Minnesota blew the doors off Dallas in Game 1 (6-1) — a dominant performance that briefly made the Wild look like the series’ best team at even money. But Dallas answered with a Game 2 win (4-2) to even things up before stealing a double-overtime thriller in Game 3 (4-3 2OT) to take a 2-1 series lead.

The series line has moved dramatically. Minnesota opened at even money (+100) and is now +145 as Dallas closed to -175. That’s a significant swing, but the double-overtime nature of Game 3 matters: Dallas didn’t win Game 3 convincingly, they survived. The Wild had chances to close that game in regulation and in overtime before Dallas finally got through. A team that survives on luck in Game 3 has not necessarily seized momentum — they’ve just escaped.

Games 4 is Saturday in Minnesota, and the Wild have the atmosphere and the motive. Kaprizov and Boldy at home in a must-win environment is not a bet against. Minnesota at +145 still represents positive expected value in a coin-flip series where they’re down 2-1 with two of the next three potential games at home.

LEANMinnesota Wild +145 on the series. Game 4 individual moneyline on Minnesota in Saint Paul is the priority action tonight. A Stars team that needed double OT to win Game 3 is not a team in complete control. The Wild need to win Saturday, and the series essentially resets if they do.
Vegas Golden Knights vs. Utah MammothSeries Tied 1-1GAME 3 TONIGHT @ UTAH

The biggest line reversal story of the first round. Vegas won Game 1 (4-2) as expected from a -190 opening favorite. But Utah came back and took Game 2 (3-2) at T-Mobile Arena, which combined with Utah’s 2-1 regular season advantage over Vegas, has now flipped the series price entirely. The Mammoth are now -130 series favorites, with Vegas sitting at +110 — a complete reversal from opening odds.

This vindicates what we argued before the series began: Tortorella’s mid-season installation of a new system in Las Vegas creates real structural uncertainty, and Utah’s roster is good enough to exploit it. Logan Cooley has been active and Clayton Keller continues to be the difference-maker we expected. Utah plays Game 3 at home tonight in Salt Lake City for the first time in franchise history as a playoff host — the crowd will be electric and the Mammoth should be highly motivated.

The line has moved from our recommended +155 to -130, meaning the pre-series value has been captured. However, Utah at -130 in a tight home game is still defensible. Vegas is not a broken team — Jack Eichel is capable of taking over a game at any point — but the structural concern about Tortorella’s system is real and Game 3 on Utah’s ice is the Mammoth’s best opportunity to seize the series.

LEANUtah Mammoth to win the series (now -130, was +155 — price has moved but thesis intact). For Game 3, Utah home moneyline is the play. This is the game that stamps Utah as a legitimate playoff team if they take it.
Edmonton Oilers vs. Anaheim DucksSeries Tied 1-1GAME 3 TONIGHT @ ANA

The series nobody expected to be even is perfectly even. Edmonton won a tight Game 1 (4-3) behind McDavid, but the Ducks responded by thoroughly outplaying the Oilers in Game 2 (6-4 in favor of Anaheim) — a result that sent immediate shockwaves through the betting market. The series has shifted to Honda Center in Anaheim for Games 3 and 4, and the Ducks’ young roster is playing with a confidence that is genuinely unnerving for Edmonton backers.

The series price has moved slightly — Edmonton opened at -200 and is currently around -220, while Anaheim has come in from +165 to approximately +175. Interestingly, the market still believes in the Oilers despite the Game 2 loss, perhaps because McDavid and Draisaitl have historically been significantly better in their home building in the playoffs. But the games are going to Anaheim now, and the Ducks’ young core — Mason McTavish, Leo Carlsson — looks more comfortable in this environment than many anticipated.

This is a genuine test of McDavid’s will. He has been to back-to-back Finals and lost both. The urgency is real. But the Ducks are not playing scared, and Honda Center will be the loudest it has been since the 2017 playoff run. We’re sticking with Edmonton to win the series, but the game-level plays in Anaheim need to reflect appropriate caution.

LEANEdmonton wins the series (still -220 — acceptable price for the best player in the world needing a statement). But avoid the Oilers game-line in Anaheim at inflated chalk prices. Wait for Games 5 and 7 at Rogers Centre if the series extends — McDavid at home in a close series is where real value returns.

The Big Picture: What the First Two Games Have Told Us

Six of eight series are now telling coherent stories. Here are the macro takeaways for bettors navigating the rest of Round 1 and thinking ahead to Round 2:

  • The East upsets are real. Philadelphia being one of the most dominant teams through three games is not what the bracket anticipated — the Flyers as a +140 pre-series pick were the upset of the round, and they are now on the doorstep of the second round. The East bracket is significantly more open than it looked on paper.
  • Colorado is still the team to beat. Three consecutive wins over a solid Kings team, two of them decided by one goal, confirms the Avalanche’s depth and resilience. MacKinnon being healthy is the single most important variable in the Western Conference. Their futures price should be bought before it compresses further.
  • The Pacific is genuinely wide open. Utah has flipped the series against Vegas. Anaheim took Game 2 from Edmonton. Neither Pacific series is behaving like its opening odds suggested. This creates legitimate second-round bracket uncertainty — whoever emerges from the Pacific at any price is likely a worthwhile investment before Round 2 lines are posted.
  • Beware the double-overtime illusion. Dallas survived a 2OT Game 3 and now opens as a -175 series favorite. The market is treating survival as dominance. It isn’t. Teams that needed OT to win a road game in Game 3 are not suddenly the series’ best team — they’re tied in terms of talent with a 2-1 lead. Minnesota at +145 is a live dog in this context.
  • The under trend is significant. Five of the six completed games in the Lightning-Canadiens and Stars-Wild series have gone under. Low-event, defense-first hockey is dominating both matchups. In tight series where both teams are disciplined, totals bettors should be biased toward the under especially in road games.

Looking Ahead: Round 2 Futures Value Now

Two series are effectively decided. That means Round 2 bracket shape in the East is already crystallizing, and bettors who act before series end will find better prices than those who wait for official confirmation.
