2026 NHL Playoffs – Round 1 Report

A week into the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs and five of eight first-round series have been decided. Tonight, all three remaining series could end — or extend — simultaneously. Buffalo and Boston play Game 6 at TD Garden. Montreal hosts Tampa Bay in a potential series-clinching game. And Utah gets one more crack at defending home ice against Vegas in a win-or-go-home environment in Salt Lake City. Before we dissect what’s left, let’s account for everything that’s happened since puck drop on April 18.

The short version: the upsets delivered, the favorites mostly held, and one of the most anticipated series of the round turned into one of the biggest stories of the first week of the playoffs. McDavid and Draisaitl are going home. The Ducks are dancing.

CLOSED SERIES — FULL RECAP

Carolina Hurricanes def. Ottawa Senators 4-0Swept in 4FINAL

Exactly what was projected: a methodical, suffocating sweep. Carolina held Ottawa to two goals in the first two games and never allowed the Senators to gain any traction offensively. The Hurricanes won each of the four games by one or two goals — clinical, not dominant on the scoresheet, but utterly commanding in terms of process and structure. Ottawa’s youth showed in every critical moment. Rod Brind’Amour’s system neutralized Brady Tkachuk’s physicality and Tim Stutzle’s rush opportunities throughout. Carolina advances to face Philadelphia and enters the second round as the clear Eastern Conference favorite.

BET RESULTCarolina -280 series chalk: WIN. No surprise here — the series went exactly as structured. Carolina covered the series price as the clear favorite and never trailed in a meaningful sense.
Colorado Avalanche def. Los Angeles Kings 4-0Swept in 4FINAL

The other sweep, and the one that confirmed Colorado’s status as the prohibitive Western Conference favorite. The Avalanche won all four games by a combined 12-5 goal margin — two one-goal games, one overtime decision, and a 5-1 blowout in Game 4. Nathan MacKinnon was a force in every contest, and Cale Makar’s mobility on the blue line created angles that LA’s defensive structure simply could not account for. Scott Wedgewood was excellent in net. The Kings, for their part, were competitive through four games and covered ATS in two of them, which reflects how low-scoring and defensively sound this series was — but Colorado’s depth advantage was ultimately decisive. The Avalanche now have nine full days of rest waiting for Minnesota.

BET RESULTColorado -340 series chalk: WIN. Expensive juice paid off. The futures angle on Colorado before the sweep closed was the real value — if you acted on it, the Stanley Cup price has since compressed meaningfully.
Philadelphia Flyers def. Pittsburgh Penguins 4-2Flyers in 6FINAL

The story of Round 1. Philadelphia at +140 was our marquee upset pick before the series began and it delivered in full. The Flyers took Games 1-3 convincingly — including a shutout in Game 2 and a 5-2 demolition in Game 3 — before Pittsburgh showed some veteran survival instinct, winning Games 4 and 5 behind Crosby and Malkin to extend the series. But Philadelphia closed it out in Game 6 in overtime on a Cam York goal, and the Flyers are headed to the second round for the first time since 2018.

Samuel Ersson was outstanding all series. Travis Konecny and the Flyers’ depth scoring were consistent. Pittsburgh’s big-name forwards never generated the sustained zone time needed to break down Ersson in a seven-game format. The Penguins’ 14 regular-season overtime losses foreshadowed a team that plays close games and loses close games — and that’s exactly what happened.

BET RESULTPhiladelphia +140 series upset: WIN. The pre-series pick returned full value. If you also took Pittsburgh moneyline in Game 4 as our desperation home-team situational angle, that cashed too.
Minnesota Wild def. Dallas Stars 4-2Wild in 6FINAL

Minnesota ended an 11-year playoff series drought in dominant fashion, and the scoreline across six games — outscoring Dallas 22-11 despite the Stars holding the shot-attempt edge — tells a story of a team built to win playoff games even when the possession numbers are against them. Quinn Hughes had a spectacular Game 6 in Saint Paul, scoring twice and adding an assist in a 5-2 clincher. Matt Boldy had two empty-net goals to seal it. The Wild’s goaltending from Jesper Wallstedt was a series-defining factor from start to finish.

The single most telling stat: Dallas went 217 consecutive minutes without an even-strength goal across the back half of the series. Minnesota’s defensive structure — particularly their ability to collapse the middle lane and force the Stars to the perimeter — neutralized one of the league’s most potent offensive units. Mikko Rantanen, acquired at the deadline for this exact purpose, was a non-factor at 5v5 throughout.

BET RESULTMinnesota +100 series upset: WIN. Even money on the Wild was the cleanest value on the board before Game 1. The +145 post-Game 3 correction also delivered for anyone who added at the adjusted price.
Anaheim Ducks def. Edmonton Oilers 4-2Ducks in 6FINAL

The upset of the round, and one that reframes an entire franchise. Anaheim won their first playoff series since 2017 by outplaying a two-time Stanley Cup finalist across six games — holding Connor McDavid without a point in three of six games and limiting him to six points in the series, well below his historic playoff standard. Leo Carlsson, Troy Terry, and Chris Kreider each had a goal and two assists in the clinching 5-2 Game 6 win at Honda Center. Lukas Dostal was composed in net throughout.

The Ducks’ power play was the decisive special teams edge: 8-for-16 in the series, including a power-play goal in 10 consecutive games dating back to the regular season. Edmonton’s penalty kill failed at the worst possible time in a series where Kris Knoblauch’s team consistently gave up man-advantages in key moments. Draisaitl led the Oilers with 10 points in the series and played hard throughout, but McDavid’s three pointless games were the story. The generational player could not elevate his team past a young, motivated Ducks squad that played with the fearlessness of a team with nothing to lose.

BET RESULTEdmonton -200 series favorite: LOSS. Our series pick was wrong — the Ducks were the better team and deserved to advance. The saving grace: our advice to avoid the Oilers game-line in Anaheim at inflated chalk prices protected bankroll on the individual game plays where Anaheim had the most value.

ACTIVE SERIES — GAME 6 DECISIONS TONIGHT

Buffalo Sabres vs. Boston BruinsBUF leads 3-2GAME 6 @ BOS — 7:30 PM

The most dramatic series of the first round has produced five different game-by-game winners and two of the most contrasting results imaginable: Buffalo’s 6-1 demolition of Boston in Game 4 against the Bruins’ gutsy 2-1 overtime win in Game 5 back in KeyBank Center. The series is now exactly where it was before the playoffs began — Buffalo with the advantage, Boston needing to win to stay alive — only now it’s at TD Garden with the Bruins’ season on the line.

Game 5 in Buffalo told you something important about Boston. Down 3-1 in the series, road underdogs, playing in the loudest building they’d been in all year, Jeremy Swayman went in and stole a hockey game. The Bruins’ 2-1 overtime win was the kind of performance that earns a fanbase’s trust — playoff-tested players making the plays that needed to be made when elimination was imminent. Swayman was exceptional. Pastrnak, scoreless through multiple games, is overdue for a defining performance. The crowd at TD Garden tonight will be at maximum volume.

For bettors: Buffalo at -220 or so on the series is now expensive chalk. The Bruins have proven they can win in KeyBank Center and can steal a Game 6 at home. Boston’s moneyline tonight is the most interesting active play on the board: a desperate playoff-proven team, elite goaltender, best player in the matchup who hasn’t found his level yet, at home with their season ending if they don’t win.

LEANBoston moneyline tonight in Game 6. If Swayman duplicates his Game 5 performance and Pastrnak finds one, the Bruins steal this game and force a Game 7 back in Buffalo — which is a coin flip by any measure. The series bet on Buffalo has already moved past actionable value. Bet the game.
Montreal Canadiens vs. Tampa Bay LightningMTL leads 3-2GAME 6 @ MTL — 7:00 PM

Five games, five road team wins. Every single game of this series has been won by the visiting club, which is statistically extraordinary and puts Montreal in the driver’s seat as they host Game 6 at Bell Centre. The Canadiens won Game 5 on the road in Tampa Bay — 3-2 — making it three wins for the road team in a row after Tampa took Game 4 at home.

The pattern here is not noise — it reflects two defensive systems that are more effective at suppressing the opponent’s home-ice advantages than they are at creating offensive momentum in front of their own crowd. Bell Centre is electric in the playoffs, but Montreal has been better in quiet, structured road environments this series. Tampa’s identity under Jon Cooper is built around exactly this kind of muted, methodical playoff hockey. The Lightning are not done — Kucherov has not had his signature series performance yet, and Vasilevskiy’s ability to steal a game on the road is well-documented.

Montreal at home closing out a series is the intuitive play, but the road team winning every game in this series is the data point that complicates every instinct. Tampa’s moneyline in Game 6 — as the road team with Vasilevskiy and Kucherov and a mandate to avoid elimination — follows the established series pattern perfectly.

LEANTampa Bay road moneyline in Game 6, following the series pattern of road teams winning every game. This is a contrarian play against the intuitive home-team clincher narrative. If Tampa wins, Game 7 in their building is a genuine coin flip and a much better line. Montreal to win the series is still the correct thesis long-term.
Vegas Golden Knights vs. Utah MammothVGK leads 3-2GAME 6 @ UTAH — 10:00 PM

The most physically and emotionally exhausting series of the first round. Five games, three of them decided in overtime or double overtime, with the Mammoth winning Game 3 convincingly before Vegas stole Games 4 and 5 in back-to-back overtime decisions. Jack Eichel has been Vegas’s best player when it has mattered most — his double-overtime winner in Game 5 was the pivotal moment of the series and has given Vegas the 3-2 edge heading back to Salt Lake City for Game 6.

Utah’s home environment in this series has been genuine. Logan Cooley and Clayton Keller have been excellent, and the Mammoth’s first-ever playoff home games have produced passionate, full-building atmospheres. But the back-to-back overtime losses have drained a roster that doesn’t have Vegas’s depth of playoff experience — Tortorella’s system has reasserted itself precisely when the games have gotten slowest and tightest.

Tonight’s game is Utah’s season. They’re 3-0 all-time in home elimination games in their brief history (counting Arizona Coyotes playoff history), and the crowd will be deafening. But Vegas has won two consecutive overtime games, Eichel is locked in, and the Golden Knights have a 3-2 series lead that most models give them about a 55-60% chance of converting. Mammoth moneyline at home tonight is a legitimate play given the stakes and environment — but it’s a situational bet, not a series conviction.

LEANUtah home moneyline in Game 6 as a situational play only — desperation home team, electric environment, first NHL home elimination game in franchise history. If Utah wins, Game 7 in Vegas is a genuine toss-up and both sides of that line will offer value. If you’re picking a series winner right now, Vegas is the slight lean.

ROUND 2 PREVIEW — WHAT TO EXPECT

Five teams have already punched their Round 2 tickets. Two more will join tonight, and one series may still need a Game 7. Here’s the confirmed and projected second-round bracket, with early betting intelligence on each matchup:

Carolina Hurricanes vs. Philadelphia Flyers

The matchup everyone in the East has been eyeing since Carolina began their first-round sweep and Philadelphia started closing in on Pittsburgh. This is the most fascinating second-round series on the bracket — the Hurricanes as massive structural favorites against a Flyers team riding genuine momentum and the confidence of a first-round upset. Carolina’s system under Brind’Amour is tailor-made to slow down hot teams: disciplined defensive structure, excellent penalty kill, tight gaps throughout the neutral zone. Philadelphia’s success came against an aging Pittsburgh team that played close games and ran out of gas. The question is whether the Flyers’ young core — Konecny, Ersson, Porter Martone — can sustain their level against a team this well-organized.

Carolina at roughly -300 is steep but defensible for a team this well-built. The Flyers at +240 is worth a small speculative position — Ersson’s form and the momentum factor are real, and underdog value in a second-round series between two quality teams at that price is worth a unit. Watch the line for the first game before committing the series price.

R2 LEANCarolina to win the series (-300 chalk, defensible). Speculative unit on Philadelphia +240 — the Flyers are more dangerous than the price suggests and Ersson’s goaltending is a genuine series-changer.

Buffalo Sabres vs. Montreal Canadiens (projected)

The Atlantic Division semifinal — if both series close as projected — would pit Buffalo’s emotional, high-energy roster against a Montreal team that has played the most overtime hockey of any team remaining in the playoffs. Five of the Canadiens’ six games against Tampa Bay went to overtime. Their legs will be tested. The Sabres, who swept Games 3 and 4 against Boston, have shown legitimate two-way structure in this series, with Luukkonen playing above expectations and their depth scoring showing up in the right moments.

Montreal at +135 against Buffalo is the early value on this bracket. The Canadiens are battle-tested from five overtime games, Lane Hutson’s offensive instincts create matchup problems for any opponent, and Cole Caufield remains a legitimate first-line goal threat at playoff pace. Buffalo’s inexperience, which we flagged before Round 1, is less of a factor after winning a difficult six-game series — but the Sabres haven’t faced a defensive structure as organized as Montreal’s.

R2 LEANMontreal Canadiens at +135 (projected). Five overtime games have hardened this team, and their defensive structure has legitimately improved across the series. Buffalo’s first playoff series win in 14 years is celebrated — but Round 2 against a deeper Montreal team is a different test.

Colorado Avalanche vs. Minnesota Wild

The Western Conference’s marquee second-round matchup. Colorado swept four games and has had nine days off by the time this series begins. Minnesota eliminated Dallas in six and will arrive with good momentum but shorter rest. The talent gap between these two teams is significant — MacKinnon, Makar, Mikko Rantanen (no relation to the Dallas forward), and a deep supporting cast against a Wild team that beat a depleted Dallas squad missing Roope Hintz and Tyler Seguin.

Colorado at roughly -280 on the series is the market’s correct assessment. Minnesota’s Wallstedt was excellent against Dallas, but facing MacKinnon and a fully healthy Avalanche offense is a different assignment. The Wild’s best path is keeping games tight through two periods and hoping for overtime variance — they are 3-0 in overtime games this postseason. The under on totals in this series should be considered: Colorado won all four first-round games with relatively modest goal totals, and Minnesota’s defensive identity under John Hynes is built to suppress scoring.

R2 LEANColorado to win the series (-280). Side play: Series total under — both teams have shown defensive discipline in Round 1. Colorado averaged 3.25 goals per game against LA; Minnesota has suppressed scoring consistently. Games will be tight before the Avalanche eventually pull away.

Anaheim Ducks vs. Vegas Golden Knights or Utah Mammoth

The most intriguing second-round matchup on paper, regardless of who comes through tonight. Anaheim’s upset of Edmonton has reshuffled Western Conference expectations entirely. The Ducks — young, powered by an elite power play (8-for-16 against Edmonton), and riding a Dostal hot streak — are now viewed as a legitimate second-round threat rather than a feel-good story. Their Round 2 opponent will be either an exhausted Vegas team that needed back-to-back overtime games to survive Utah, or a Mammoth squad that, if they force a Game 7, will have played seven consecutive high-leverage games.

In either scenario, Anaheim enters as a live underdog with genuine structural advantages: fresh legs, elite power play, Quenneville’s experience coaching against both potential opponents, and a team chemistry that has been building all series. If Vegas advances tonight, expect Anaheim at approximately +155 to +170 — take it. If Utah forces Game 7 and wins, Anaheim against a fresh Mammoth team is a closer line, but still worth a small underdog position.

R2 LEANAnaheim Ducks as a live underdog regardless of opponent (~+155 to +170 projected). The Ducks’ power play is the most dangerous special-teams unit remaining in the West, and their youth and momentum are real advantages against either an exhausted Vegas or a Utah team pushed to seven games.
