Three of four Round 2 picks cashed or are on track. The Anaheim miss is the notable loss — the Ducks won Games 2 and 4 to keep the series competitive, but Vegas closed it out in Game 6, with Carter Hart delivering when it mattered most despite a shaky series overall. Our +135 series bet on Anaheim is a confirmed loss. Three of four picks correct in Round 2 (Carolina, Colorado chalks; Montreal on track).

Round 2 Series Wrap

Montreal Canadiens vs. Buffalo SabresMTL leads 3-2GAME 6 SAT @ MTL

The series has been exactly the see-saw battle the even opening odds suggested it would be. Montreal won Games 2 and 3 convincingly in what became a pattern of home dominance — every game in this series has been won by the home team through five games. Buffalo won Game 1 (4-2) and Game 4 (3-2); Montreal took Games 2 (5-1), 3 (6-2), and 5 (6-3) in dominant fashion. The goal differentials in Montreal home wins are striking: +4, +4, +3 in their three victories at Bell Centre. When the Canadiens play at home, they are on a different level than this same team on the road.

The betting case for Montreal closing tomorrow is straightforward and supported by every data point in this series. Bell Centre is the loudest building left in the playoffs. Jakub Dobeš has been outstanding in his two home starts, and the Canadiens’ defensive structure that held Tampa Bay to three goals or fewer in all seven games has reasserted itself at home. Lane Hutson (2G, 3A) has been the difference-maker we identified pre-series. Nick Suzuki’s five assists have come quietly but decisively.

For Buffalo, the damage is compounding. Alex Lyon — the goaltending upgrade that won them the first-round series — has allowed five or more goals in three of his five starts. He has a .873 save percentage in the series, which against a Montreal team playing this well at home is not survivable. Tage Thompson (2G, 5A) and Tuch (4G, 3A) have been productive, but the Sabres cannot win a shooting competition against this Montreal team in Bell Centre.

LEANMontreal Canadiens to eliminate Buffalo in Game 6 tomorrow. Every home game in this series has been won by the home team by multiple goals — Bell Centre has been a complete fortress. Dobeš at home is a different goaltender than on the road. Lay the moneyline on Montreal in Game 6. If the series goes to Game 7 in Buffalo, this reverts to a genuine coin flip — but it shouldn’t get there.
Vegas Golden Knights vs. Anaheim DucksVGK wins 4-2SERIES COMPLETE

Vegas closed out Anaheim in six games Thursday night, ending our +135 series bet on the Ducks. The series was the most chaotic of the second round — alternating home wins through the first four games, a Vegas OT win in Game 5, and then a road close in Game 6 at Honda Center that broke the home-team pattern defining the series. Credit Carter Hart, who delivered when it mattered most in the clincher despite an uneven series overall. This is a Golden Knights team that knows how to win elimination games.

The Stone injury situation remains the central variable heading into the WCF. Vegas won Game 6 without their captain — that speaks to Tortorella’s system and roster depth — but Eichel, Marner, and company now face a Colorado team operating at a different level than Anaheim. Marner leads the entire postseason in scoring with 18 points across 11 games, and Eichel has 15. The offense is undeniably there. The question is whether Vegas can generate that offense against MacKinnon and Makar’s Colorado for four wins.

RESULTVegas wins 4-2. Our Anaheim +135 series call is a confirmed loss. Vegas advances to face Colorado in the Western Conference Final starting May 20 at Ball Arena. Stone’s WCF availability remains uncertain — that is the single biggest injury story heading into the next round.

CONFERENCE FINALS — FULL BETTING GUIDE

Colorado Avalanche vs. Vegas Golden KnightsWCF — Starts May 20 @ COLCOL -280 FAV

Colorado is 9-1 this postseason. They swept the Kings, took Minnesota in five, and have done it in multiple ways — the 9-6 Game 1 offensive explosion, the tight defensive Game 2 (5-2), a road loss in Game 3 that they absorbed without panic, then two dominant wins to close. The Avalanche are the most complete team remaining in the playoffs, and MacKinnon (13 pts, 7G/6A in 9 games) has rediscovered his postseason voice after being held largely in check against Los Angeles.

The series price of Colorado -280 is steep but structurally earned. The Avalanche were 121-point Presidents’ Trophy winners. They have Cale Makar, whose two-way dominance makes their defensive structure the best on either side of this bracket. Their power play has jumped from a modest 17% regular-season clip to 25% in the playoffs — an improvement that becomes increasingly dangerous against a Vegas penalty kill that has been tested and now faces a weakened captain situation.

The Stone injury is the single most important variable in this series. Mark Stone is Vegas’s best defensive forward, their captain, and the connective tissue between Eichel’s line and the rest of the team. His absence changes the WCF from a tight series into something more lopsided. Mitch Marner leads the postseason scoring race with 18 points, and Jack Eichel has 15 — but without Stone anchoring the defensive structure, Colorado’s depth forwards (Kadri, Lehkonen, Drury, Roy) will create problems all series long.

One legitimate concern for Colorado bettors: the goaltending situation. Scott Wedgewood was pulled in Game 3 against Minnesota and Mackenzie Blackwood came in relief. Jared Bednar has not confirmed his Game 1 starter. Wedgewood’s .911 across seven starts and Blackwood’s solid relief work give Colorado options — but uncertainty in net is the only chink in an otherwise dominant armor. Carter Hart’s .912 in 12 starts for Vegas is the more proven commodity.

LEANColorado Avalanche -280 on the series (accept the price — the Stone injury alone justifies this number). For game-line value, target Avalanche individual moneylines in Games 1-2 at Ball Arena. If you want to fade the price, Colorado -1.5 puck line at roughly -125 requires a series win without a Game 7 — reasonable given their 9-1 postseason record. Best prop: Nathan MacKinnon to score in any given game (consistent production, 7 goals in 9 games).
Carolina Hurricanes vs. TBD (MTL or BUF)ECF — Starts ~May 19–21CAR HEAVY FAV

Carolina has been the most dominant team in the Eastern Conference for more than a decade of regular seasons, and this postseason they are finally delivering on that potential. Eight wins in a row. Two sweeps. A total of 10 goals allowed across eight playoff games — an absurd number that reflects the Brind’Amour system operating at its absolute peak. Frederik Andersen is healthy and controlling, Taylor Hall has 12 points (including multiple clutch goals), and Jackson Blake’s OT winner to close the Philadelphia sweep announced him as a genuine playoff performer.

The ECF opponent is determined tomorrow, but the betting calculus differs meaningfully between the two possibilities. Carolina is a -350 to -400 favorite against Montreal and closer to -250 against Buffalo, depending on how the market reads the Sabres’ Cinderella momentum. From a pure betting standpoint, Montreal +300 or Buffalo +350 (rough estimates) represent the range of underdog value in this matchup. Neither is a great bet against a team that hasn’t lost in 27 days, but here’s the case for each:

Montreal: Dobeš has proven he can win in elimination games. The Canadiens held Tampa’s elite offense to three or fewer goals in all seven games in Round 1. Bell Centre in a Conference Final would be the most electric building in the East. Lane Hutson’s offensive upside from the blue line is the closest thing to a series-changing weapon either potential opponent has against Carolina’s suppression system.

Buffalo: If the Sabres survive Game 6 and 7 and carry that momentum into the ECF, the Lyon-Lyon who was excellent in the Boston series could re-emerge. The crowd at KeyBank Center for any home game would be the loudest it’s ever been. Alex Tuch as a physical forward creates problems for Carolina’s defensive structure in a way Montreal doesn’t. But Lyon’s .873 in the Montreal series is alarming against a team as defensively structured as the Hurricanes.

LEANMontreal +300 (approx.) in the ECF is the preferred play IF they eliminate Buffalo tomorrow. Dobeš vs. Andersen is a goaltending matchup where experience matters less than form, and Dobeš is the hotter goaltender. Carolina will be favored in every single game of this series — but we’ve seen all postseason that Carolina home-price chalk is acceptable while road games offer value on the opponent. Target the Canadiens moneyline in Games 3 and 4 in Montreal specifically.

Stanley Cup Futures — Where the Market Sits

TeamPre-PlayoffsCurrent Cup OddsRinkHive Rating
Colorado Avalanche+300+130BUY — deepest team left
Carolina Hurricanes+450 (approx)+160BUY — relentless system
Montreal Canadiens+2500+900–1000HOLD — live Cinderella at price
Buffalo Sabres+1500+1100–1200HOLD — story has legs at +1200
Vegas Golden Knights+625 (R2 entry)+700AVOID — Stone injury, Hart shaky

Colorado +130 is the safest futures play with the deepest roster, the best regular-season coach, and the most proven regular-season performer in MacKinnon. Carolina at +160 is the value play on the East side — they’ve been better than Colorado through the playoffs to this point and their defensive structure is historically hard to beat in a seven-game series.

The Cinderella plays: Montreal at +900-1000 and Buffalo at +1100-1200 are lottery ticket buys, not conviction bets. But this postseason has rewarded the people willing to take those prices. A small futures position on both Atlantic teams is defensible given how unpredictable the East bracket has been.

Conn Smythe Trophy Watch

PlayerOddsPlayoff PointsRinkHive Note
Nathan MacKinnon, COL+20013 (9 GP)Correct frontrunner — if COL wins, he wins this award
Frederik Andersen, CAR+450—If CAR wins the Cup, Andersen’s goaltending performance likely takes this
Mitch Marner, VGK17-118 (11 GP)Postseason scoring leader — but VGK face huge WCF hill vs COL
Taylor Hall, CAR12-112 (8 GP)Underrated Smythe candidate if CAR wins — his postseason resurgence is real
Jakub Dobeš, MTL35-1—Absolute lottery ticket — but if MTL wins the Cup, a rookie goalie wins MVP

MacKinnon at +200 is the single cleanest Conn Smythe bet on the board. His team is the favorite to win the Cup and he leads Colorado in every meaningful offensive category. The Hall at 12-1 is the sleeper value on the Carolina side.
